There are two possible causes: too few licenses, or licenses checked out by people who are not using them. A license server cannot tell the two apart. Open iT LicenseAnalyzer™ records every denial (who, which feature, when) and also measures keyboard, mouse, CPU and I/O activity on the user's machine. Put together, the reports show whether you need more seats or need idle seats released. Open iT's documentation puts the idle share at 20–40% of checked-out licenses in typical engineering environments.
LicenseAnalyzer works in two steps. First it reads your license servers: it polls them every hour at 5-minute samples and parses their logs, so you see who checked out which feature, from which machine and when. Then it watches activity on the user's computer (Windows, Unix or macOS) and separates working time from idle time. The Active vs Inactive per User and Work Ratio reports show the gap for each user and application.
Yes. After an idle period you set, a pop-up warns the user. If nobody responds, Open iT suspends the application, which frees the license and keeps the session as it was, or closes it after an autosave. Suspend matters because reopening Petrel or Ansys Workbench costs an engineer 5–15 minutes. Pre-built autosave scripts cover Petrel, Ansys SpaceClaim and Ansys Workbench. This works with FlexNet, LM-X, IBM LUM and RLM license managers.
Open iT supports 6,000+ applications across 100+ license managers and 27 cloud and SaaS platforms. Named license managers include FlexNet, Dassault Systemes DSLS, RLM, LM-X, Sentinel RMS, CodeMeter, OLicense and PetEx. Cloud sources include Autodesk Cloud, Bentley Cloud, Esri Cloud, AVEVA Cloud and SOLIDWORKS Cloud. One report covers applications whatever license manager they run on.
Compare three numbers over several months: peak concurrent use, denial count and the share of checked-out time that was active. If peaks hit the license limit and denials are high while activity is also high, you need seats. If denials are high but activity is low, release idle seats first. Open iT LicensePredictor™ projects usage months ahead, so the request rests on a forecast, not a guess.
