The Engineering Licenses Your ServiceNow Dashboard Can’t See
Here’s an idea: stop guessing what your engineering software actually costs you. Join Open iT at ServiceNow Nexus for Asset Management 2026 and see how the licenses running outside SAM Pro’s view (Ansys, Autodesk, MathWorks, Hexagon, and more) get metered, reconciled, and fed straight back into ServiceNow. 30 minutes with us could change how next year’s engineering software budget looks.
From Engineering License Data to Business Value: Turning Usage Intelligence into SAM and FinOps Decisions
Specialized engineering software doesn’t behave like the rest of the software estate, and entitlement counts alone can’t show whether a seat is idle or a renewal is right-sized. This session explores how usage intelligence turns engineering license data into smarter SAM and FinOps decisions.

You track assets in ServiceNow. What about what your engineers actually use?
ServiceNow SAM Pro reconciles what your organization owns against what discovery finds installed, a real, hard problem, and the platform solves it. What it doesn’t measure is whether anyone opened the application. For engineering software served from a license server (Petrel, CATIA, MATLAB), a checkout is the most the asset record ever sees, and a checkout is not use.
Open iT meters actual use per user, per feature, per host, including the module-level detail engineering licensing requires, since a bundled application like Petrel (roughly 50 modules) otherwise lands in the asset record as a single line. That data lands beside the entitlement and cost records already in ServiceNow, so the people who read it (contracts management, procurement, executives) never have to open a license-management tool to see it.
True Active Usage, not just install records
Your CMDB knows Petrel is installed. It doesn't know who opened it. Open iT measures True Active Usage at the license server, the install-versus-use gap discovery tools can't see.
Feature-level licensing, mapped to what's actually used
Petrel alone is roughly 50 modules. Open iT maps feature-to-feature-set usage so a bundled application reports as what people actually opened, not one undifferentiated line item.
Concurrent usage, measured where install-based discovery goes blind
Checked out and returned, concurrent licenses are invisible to install-based discovery. Open iT records checkouts and denials at the server, then measures what happened during the checkout, correctly reconciled across every license manager.
Usage data that closes real workflows
Vulnerability response needs a current user list to notify people, usage data is the only place it exists. Support-load analysis, renewal business cases, and named users you can actually reach all run on the same data.
Customers typically uncover 10–30% in reclaimable license spend within the first optimization cycle.
